Mitchell Recreation and Athletics Center - Denison University
Granville, OH
In 1949, Denison University began transitioning their growing athletics program from Cleveland Hall to the north side of campus with the purchase and installation of a World War II aircraft hangar which currently houses both Livingston Gym and the Recreational Gym. This facility was expanded in 1962 with the construction of the Mike Gregory Pool, in 1984 with the addition of squash courts and additional locker rooms and again in 1994 with the addition of indoor track and tennis courts in the Mitchell Center. By 2009, with their nationally recognized swim team training and competing in a small pool constructed in the 60's and over 60 percent of the student body now participating in varsity, club and/or intramural sports, Denison was determined to take up the challenge of planning and constructing the most ambitious sports facility the University had ever built.

Hastings & Chivetta, Architects was hired to design the new natatorium and renovation of existing spaces. The task of providing the University with a design that would incorporate architectural cues spanning 6 decades and blending them into a cohesive aesthetic while adding a new natatorium was a significant challenge for the design team.

Shortly after engaging Hastings & Chivetta, Denison approached us to serve as their construction manager. The team faced significant challenges including:
  • An ambitious engineering process spanning a year that involved numerous versions of budgets and resulted in significant savings
  • Engineering of over 500 auger cast piles and caps
  • Keeping the existing facility accessible for academic classwork, 23 varsity teams, 30 club teams, visiting sports teams, board meetings, Granville Highs School events, athletic camps, alumni activities and 3 graduation ceremonies.
  • The addition of over $1.3 million dollars of additional work and upgrades while construction was ongoing
  • Maintaining the scheduled opening dates for each of the three phases of construction.
  • Achieving and exceeding Denison's LEED® requirements

In the final analysis, our hard work proved successful - the new building has drawn interest and acclaim from faculty and students while we met the budget and completed all phases of the project on time.

This project is registered with the certification goal of LEED® Silver.
